About the Artist

Morris Louis (1912–1962) was an influential American painter associated with the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. Educated at the Maryland Institute, he later worked under the WPA Federal Art Project before developing his signature approach to colour field abstraction.

In 1954, inspired by Helen Frankenthaler’s innovative colour stain method, Louis began his celebrated Veils series — paintings defined by vertical washes of pigment that appeared unhandled and non-referential. His later works evolved into compositions featuring diagonal colour streams and vertical stripe formations, integrating harmony, structure and abstraction.
